Dr. Stavros Parlalis from Frederick University received a subsidy from the LIFE Cyclamen Project to participate in the online Conference RETASTE: Rethink Food Waste. The Conference was held between the 6th and 8th of May 2021 and was organized by the Hellenic Mediterranean University and Harokopio University.

The main goal of the RETASTE Conference was to present the latest scientific and technological achievements in the field of food waste management, at national, European and global level, as well as the in-depth dialogue on systems for reducing food waste and waste, utilization of organic waste and recycling of unavoidable food waste.

The RETASTE Conference initiated the dialogue for innovative solutions and optimization schemes that exploit significant opportunities for food waste reduction, reuse and recycling at all stages of the food life cycle, as well as their scalability and commercial translatability.

During the Conference, Dr. Parlalis presented the innovative project “Save Our Food”, which aimed to “rescue” food from various restaurants and offer it to people in need. This project took place in Aglantzia Municipality (April 2020 – April 2021) and some of its highlights can be seen below:

  • 14.774 portions of food were saved, with an estimated cost of almost €45.000,
  • more than 4.635 food deliveries were executed,
  • 1.138 food donations took place and
  • 12 local companies were involved in the project.

The partners of this project were: Frederick Research Center (project coordinator), the Municipality of Aglantzia, the Youth Board of Cyprus, the Nicosia Volunteer Center and the organization “Boroume”.

Dr. Parlalis is the first beneficiary of LIFE Cyclamen’s 4th Open Call, which was inviting interested parties to request a subsidy for participating in an online EU event (conference, workshop, seminar, networking event, etc.) about the environment and climate change.
