This is a video on communication tips related to the LIFE Programme. Part of a series of videos aiming at helping you with your communication actions.
In this video, we will share our 2nd Communication tip on how you define the objectives of your communication strategy.
When you define your communication objectives, you can then create more targeted and effective communication messages that will give you the desired results.
Let’s start by seeing the thinking process when defining your communication objectives!
- Firstly, you need to think how you want your target audience to react. Do you want people to register for an event, visit a location related to your project, or simply become aware of a situation?
- Then clearly identify your objective. Specify whether it’s a call to action or awareness raising, or perhaps both.
- Set SMART communication objectives and by SMART we mean: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. This is the only way to keep track of your results and take corrective actions, if necessary, within the set timeframe.
- Adapt your message and your language to your target audience and to your objective. If you’re talking to the general public then make your message simple and clear. It’s more important to get your message through than to use proper scientific terms. If your objective is to cause a certain reaction, for example reduce the food waste that households produce, then you should provide people with clear and easy to follow instructions of how to do this.
- And remember! If it is a different audience then it needs a different message.
