European Climate Pact: The role of citizens in shaping a greener Europe

The European Commission launched the European Climate Pact in December 2020. The Pact is a pan-European initiative aiming at mobilising citizens, communities and organisations to participate in climate action and encouraging their participation in the implementation of the European Green Deal.

The European Green Deal aims to transform the European Union into a just, healthy, sustainable and prosperous society, but also to redress the way we interact with nature. In addition to the policies and legislations needed to make this change, the solutions brought by the European Green Deal will only succeed if we all take an active role.

Our participation is necessary

The Climate Pact provides a space for people from all walks of life to connect, develop and collectively implement climate solutions, large and small. Through the exchange of ideas and best practices, the Climate Pact hopes to multiply the impact of these actions.

Our everyday lifestyle has an impact on everything that the European Union aims to achieve, for example how we heat or cool our homes, how we commute, how and what we consume, how we produce our products, how we work and coexist. The European Union’s challenge to move to a climate-neutral society aims ultimately to create a better future for all.

In its first phase, the Pact gives priority to actions that focus on four areas, which offer immediate benefits to the climate and the environment, as well as to the health and well-being of citizens. These areas are green spaces, green mobility, high energy efficiency buildings and green skills. For example, relevant actions can be the reduction of food waste, the reduction of consumption of animal products, the consumption of seasonal products, the insulation of buildings, the repair and reuse of appliances, etc.

The European Climate Pact is a flexible initiative and will evolve based on the ideas and contributions of the people and organisations involved.

The contribution of the LIFE Programme

The LIFE Programme – EU’s financial instrument for the environment and climate action – recognises the importance of implementing the European Climate Pact and therefore urges and encourages this effort with the ultimate goal of building a better tomorrow for all of us. More specifically, the new programming period 2021-2024 of the LIFE Programme supports the implementation of the European Climate Pact and defines it as one of its priorities under the Climate Governance and Information sector.

LIFE aims to contribute to the implementation, development and modernisation of the European environmental and climate policy and legislation through the co-financing of projects with added-value for Europe.

Beneficiaries of the LIFE Programme are public bodies, non-governmental organizations, universities, research centers and institutes, private companies, as well as start-ups.
