Online Info Day: “LIFE and Sustainable Tourism in Cyprus”

The LIFE Cyclamen team organised an Online Info Day titled: “LIFE Programme and Sustainable Tourism in Cyprus” on Wednesday June 3rd 2020.

The purpose of this Info Day was to introduce the tourism industry to this funding instrument, and encourage them to participate during the 2020 Call for Proposals, or in future LIFE Calls.

What was covered?

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the basic characteristics of the LIFE Programme, such as priority areas, rules for proposal submission and co-funding percentages. In addition, our experts used a plethora of examples showcasing how the tourism industry in Cyprus could benefit from participating in a LIFE project. The examples of LIFE projects were related to the priority areas of: Environment & Resource Efficiency, Nature & Biodiversity and Climate Action.

Our experts focused on sustainable tourism and how this could be a source of income for the tourism industry through LIFE. They also highlighted the challenges faced by the tourism industry and demonstrated how these could be turned into opportunities for funding through LIFE, with innovative examples and best practices. The examples focused on minimising environmental impact in a circular economy approach, safeguarding biodiversity and using solutions that tackle climate change.

We were pleased to see that participants included representatives from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, Regional Tourism Boards, the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the operating and managing company of our International Airports in Cyprus. Moreover, we were excited to have with us representatives from several Cypriot hotels, as well as from NGOs and SMEs interested in the environmental sustainability of tourism in Cyprus.

The participants found this Info Day very interesting and useful and many of them took the opportunity to raise questions regarding the Programme’s specificities. Additionally, they thanked the team for their initiative in organising the event.

All our Team will be available for future one-to-one meetings and we will gladly offer our consulting services whenever they are requested.
